RCTC LIFE (Learning is ForEver) Lessons from Historiography
Date(s): Feb. 7, 14, 21, 2012
Time: 1 pm - 2:30 pm
Price: Member $36, nonmember $54
Location: RCTC Heintz Bldg. , Room HA 102

How a people remember their history is not necessarily the same as what actually happened. Historiography, in this case, refers to how knowledge of the past is gathered, transmitted, and how biases can influence that transmission. Over the course of three sessions, Barry, using examples from American and World History, will discuss how the omission of events and details shapes our perceptions of our past and why, as well as how these perceptions can mold the identity of a nation and a people. Barry will also discuss how the same historical event can have multiple interpretations and how historical perceptions can change over time. Instructor: Barry McKnight, RCTC History Professor

RCTC LIFE (Learning is Forever) Conquests of America
Date(s): Feb. 9, 16, 23, 2012
Time: 9:30 am - 11 am
Price: Member $27, nonmember $40
Location: RCTC Heintz Bldg. , Room HA 104

Beginning with Columbus and continuing through Cortes, Pizarro, and others, Europeans were able to dominate a large part of the Western hemisphere as well as a number of diverse peoples. Historically, the ease with which this was achieved influenced European and American perceptions of Native Americans for centuries to come and led to many erroneous racial and cultural perceptions and biases. This course examines how this was actually achieved, what technological and biological factors made this possible, and the real impact these conquests had on all peoples involved. Instructor: Barry McKnight, RCTC History Professor

Less well know is that the inflammation of RA may extend beyond the joints, causing damage to organs including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood and blood vessels. The systemic inflammatory process is a major predictor of premature death in patients with RA, particularly from cardiovascular disease. We explore these disease features and their causes and management in this seminar. Instructor: Eric L. Matteson, M.D., M.P.H.
